The Zelkova String Quartet
was founded at the Royal Northern College of Music under the guidance
of Petr Prause, of the Talich Quartet, in 2010. They were finalists in the RNCM Weil Prize 2010 and won the RNCM Nossek Prize 2011. They competed in the RNCM Chamber Ensemble of the Year Competition 2011, playing Mendelssohn D major String Quartet, and received the Audience Prize. They participated in the RNCM Chamber Music Festival January 2011,
performing Taneyev’s 3rd Quartet and are also involved in the 2012
festival, performing both Ravel's String Quartet and 'Introduction and
Allegro'. They have many upcoming recitals both within the RNCM and
externally.
The Quartet have received coaching from Gabor Tackas-Nagy, Levon
Chilingarian, James Boyd, Thomas Kemp, Michael Bochmann and
members of the Navarra, Barbirolli and Heath Quartets to name but a
few.
This summer they enjoyed a residency in France; a week of intensive
rehearsals followed by an evening recital. The Quartet also value the
importance of musical education and have spent time coaching and
performing on Pro Corda, a chamber music course for young musicians.
Outside their life as a Quartet, the individual members also have a wealth of solo and chamber experience including performances at Bridgewater
Hall, Wigmore Hall, St John Smith's Square and in the Lake District
Summer Music Festival.
